I am the last person on earth to have a blog. This started with my boyfriend John’s idea that we should start a cheese-of-the-week blog, which we did (and promptly stopped updating because we can only eat so much cheese in a week). I quickly realized that I have a lot more to say about food in all of its manifestations than I could reasonably expect to put on a cheese blog, so I started a side project, if you will.
I’m pretty crazy about food, for multiple reasons. I like to eat well, for one. I’m not a spectacular cook, but I try. I’m more interested in the political and ecological aspects of food than the culinary, however. I’m becoming more and more devoted to creating a quasi-sustainable diet, which is kind of rough in Michigan. I’m broke most of the time, which makes it harder to buy local organic food, but it’s worth the effort. And I don’t eat meat. I’m less adamant about it than I used to be (full disclosure: I was a semi-obnoxious vegan for 4 or 5 years), but it’s something I care about.
I just finished my B.A. in English Lit at Michigan State University, and was just accepted to a Masters program in Library Science at Wayne State University. In the meantime, I’m temping at MSU’s research- and outreach- based C.S. Mott Group for Sustainable Agriculture. I’ve been working there on and off for the past three years now, and I really love it. I’m mostly a peon, but now that I’m no longer a student employee I’m being given more serious projects. Right now I’m working on a grant project in which I’ll be doing case studies of 15 Michigan organic farms and their market strategies, which should be 15 kinds of fun. I’m also the bookkeeper for the Michigan Organic Food and Farm Alliance. The position really has much more to do with accounting than with food and farms, but the people are nice, and so is the pay. My third, newest, and least rewarding job is at the Capital Area District Library, where I stamp books for an astonishingly low hourly wage.
Pretty soon I’ll be gardening again. We live in an apartment for the time being, so I have a plot in a nearby community garden, which is a really wonderful thing to have. I’m not particularly good at gardening (I’m pretty new to it), but I have visions of canning hundreds of tomatoes to last me through next winter. I’ll see how that goes and keep you posted.
